My "Trash to Treasure" Project

Yowzie! I just love DIY projects! Check out Jena's super cute "Made It Monday" project over at 1st Grade with Miss Snowden. Her "Happy Teacher Box" turned out so cute! I decided to join Jena & link up with 4th Grade Frolics.

Well, here's a look at the lil projects that I've been working on... This is the BEFORE pic of a desk chair that was sitting in my basement looking all ugly.
Before: ugly & boring right?!?

...and this is the AFTER!!! Ta-Da! What do you think?

After: polka dot cuteness!!!
This project was super simple-just unscrew the chair back & seat. Cut a piece of material to fit around them & use a staple gun to attach the new fabric. Since all chairs are a little bit different, its kinda hard to give specific directions for this project. The back on my chair had a hard plastic cover that I had to remove also. I stapled the fabric & then attached the cover over the edges of the fabric that you see here in this pic.

And this is my polka dot chair with my new crate seats! Yes! they are finally finished! WooHoo!

I hate to admit that those crate seats have been on my To-Do list since last year. Cutting the plywood to fit inside the crate is really the hardest part. Since summer seems to be flying by, I decided that I better move that part of the project to the "Honey-Do List" & the boards were cut in no time! {Thanks Bryan!!} They turned out so stinkin' cute- I can't wait to get them in my classroom!

What's your summer project?

  1. Oh my gosh girl! That looks so good! I never thought of taking the seat off and then putting it back on. I've tried to make little slip covers before to cover up the rolly chairs in my classroom and they just looked like poo :). Nothing like your super awesome polka dot chair! Thanks for the shout out!

  2. I love your crate seats and I really want to try this project. I've read that a lot of people are taking their crates into the home improvement store and having the plywood cut to size.

    1. The seat height is about 12". Its about an inch shorter than the chairs that I have there now so hopefully it will work out ok...if not, I guess I'll move the table down an inch! :)

  15. Christie,
Love, love, love your adorable polka-dot chair! I also love you darling crate seats. I've been planning to make these all summer. I went to Walmart and Target to purchase the crates but this year the crates are about 10" tall. Where did you purchase your 12" crates? Maybe when you said they were 12", that's after padded cover. Also, what did you use for the padding, I've read different variations?

  19. Love the chair Christie!! I just pushed one out in the hallway at school today. I might just have to go out and move it back into my room, lol. I think your crate chairs turned out really cute. I got a little concerned about little fluids that my kinders might leak, so I bought some beautiful black vinyl to cover mine. I did buy a very colorful ribbon for the loop though. :0) Now, I'm just waiting to cut the plywood and I'm ready to go! Yeah! Thanks for the chair idea! Love it!

  20. Great job! I am now following your blog. I have a question about last year's back to school giveaway. I happened to see your jungle/safari products on pinterest and was linked to your blog. How can I get a copy of the welcome poem and postcards/poster? Is it available on teachers pay teachers? Appreciate your reply as I am planning to use the jungle/safari theme in my classroom this year. I do not have a blog but my e-mail address is GennieKay@hotmail.com. Thank you and I really enjoy visiting your blog as I search for new ideas to use this schol year.

  26. Thank you for this tutorial I covered my computer chair and love it. This is so simple. I did change the way I did mine since my chair back doesn’t come apart so I made a slip cover and the same for the seat so now if I get bored with the pattern I can change it.
