What's Hatchin' in First Grade?

Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend! I'm trying to enjoy the last few hours of our "spring break" {which is actually 3 days...but at this point in the school year, I really appreciate a few days off!}Tomorrow our class will be welcoming some new visitors....1 dozen bright shiny eggs! Our incubator is all ready and the kiddos are soooo anxious to see what hatches. {Ssshhhh....don't tell them that we will be hatching chicks! I've pretended that I'm really not sure what kind of eggs they will be sending us this year....I want them to think about all of the different animals that hatch from eggs. And...OH MY! does it have some of them thinking! I've heard, "Lizards! Snakes!" and yes, even "Dinosaurs!" Dinosaurs?!? Hmmm....we might have to talk about that a little more! :)

We are going to be starting our day off by filling the first few pages of our Egg-Hatching Observation Journal. Then each morning I will give my firsties a chance to observe any changes in the incubator & complete another journal page. This journal is part of my "What's Hatchin' Chick?" unit. This is one of my favorite units of the entire year! The kiddos really get into all of the activities.....soooo much excitement in the classroom! If you would like to check it out, just head on over to my lil shop at Teachers Pay Teachers or Teachers Notebook
.

And...being the FREEBIE lover that I am, I want to share one of our fun little centers that my firsties will be working at this week. Just click the pic to grab a copy!

I will keep you posted on our hatch status! Are you hatching eggs in your classroom? Would love to hear from you! Happy Spring!!!

Awesome Adjectives! {Freebie}

I'm just lovin' this adjective activity! They are just too funny!

I saw this idea on Pinterest {of course!}& couldn't wait to try it with my firsties. Laurie from First Grade Lyon's Den posted some super-cute pics of her students' work-just click HERE to check out her post. Thanks so much for the inspiration Laurie! This is a really easy peasy activity to prepare since most of the work is done by the students. Just give them a piece of plain white paper &  let them draw themselves. {I did have to give a little direction on the size-some of them wanted to draw very teeny tiny pictures!} They cut out their pictures & then glued them onto a piece of construction paper. I also made up little frames for them to write their names in & cut small pieces of white paper for the adjectives. If you would like a copy of the name frames & this title sign below, just click on the pic!

Tomorrow is our 100th day, so I'm gearing up for a super-fun day {we are all dressing like 100 year olds!} I'll be sure to post pic our our day!

I "MUSTACHE" You A Question!

Hey y'all! Look what I found in the Target Dollar Spot...
Are these not the funnest things ever?!? And just a dollar! I knew when I saw these fuzzy lil things that I would really be able to catch my firsties attention! Now to decide....what should I do with them???

Click on the pic to check out this mini-unit!
I "mustache" you a question...
Do your kiddos need a little extra practice with asking and telling sentences? Well, my firsties still get a lil confused with the whole asking/telling sentence thing at times. So these fuzzy lil helpers are exactly what I needed to create some writing fun! And if you can't find those in the dollar spot at Target anymore, you should be able to find them at Wal-Mart, Oriental Trading or any party store. Don't want to mess with finding them at a store....no worries! Just use the pattern included in this packet to copy an entire sheet of mustaches onto black paper. Another fun {and easy} way to make a mustache is to draw one on the student's index finger and then they hold it under their nose-sooo silly! Then grab your camera & WAH*LAH! You are ready for some super sentence-writing fun! We got started with an ANCHOR CHART...

I also listed some of the words that an ASKING SENTENCE begins with. Last year I made this little chart for a handy lil reference for the kiddos. Click on the pic below to link to that FREEBIE!

Okay! Now let's check out this super-silly writing activity. The kiddos really love the idea of being able to write a question and then having someone else answer it. Of course, we had to give lots of examples of questions AND how to answer with a complete sentence. {Many of them want to just ask a "yes or no" question.} This would even be a great activity to connect to a science or social studies unit!

Be sure to visit my TpT shop or Teachers Notebook shop to preview the other sentence writing activities included in my "I MUSTACHE YOU A QUESTION" mini-unit!
Hope you have some super-silly learning fun!

Hey everyone! Happy December! DECEMBER?!?!?? Does anyone else wonder what in the world happened to November? I feel like there are soooo many activities to try to fit into December! My firsties have been working on verbs and I an anchor chart with this fun little poem/song that is sung to the tune of "B-I-N-G-O".
